What’s your career story?

Swirl Education and Communication is run by me, Shannon. I found my way to a career in environmental education in a few different ways.

My parents packed up and travelled around Australia in an old camper van in the late 70s. I was almost 2. Maybe it was playing in the red and brown dirt that made me love Australia. When I was 14, I separated recycling on our front lawn after a family party. This was in the early 90s when you chucked all the rubbish in the bin together. I travelled around Australia again when I was 22 and decided to devote my career to the environment. I’ve lived and worked in some amazing places with wonderful people.

I love this country, am eternally grateful I was born here and appreciate it for its stunning landscapes, tiny wonders and its flaws.

Swirl has been my family nickname since I was a teenager (separating that rubbish!) and I think it suits my nature-loving spirit. Leaves, water, wind, dirt, fire… they all swirl. 🍃💧💨🪵🔥

I also love reading novels, watching crime dramas and walking in the fresh air.
