Swirl Education and Communication is a hub for quality Australian sustainability teaching resources. If you’re teaching Science, Geography, Humanities and Social Sciences and incorporating the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, chances are you’ve searched online for quality Australian lesson plans, activities and resources about our environment. It can be time consuming to find something that works for your classroom. That’s where the directory can help – a database of hundreds of free sustainability teaching resources (lesson plans, activities plus teacher and student guides). There are also some great resources for Early Childhood learning too.

Search the free directory to find environmental education resources from across Australia. You’ll find links to free sustainability lesson plans, activities and resources developed by government organisations, not-for-profit businesses and other enthusiastic creators.

Kids learn about the environment by immersing themselves in it. A lot of the activities are school-based, and many offer ideas to get out into the environment for hands-on learning.

I’m Shannon and I’ve worked in environmental education since 2006. As a VIT registered teacher, I’ve spent my career designing, developing and delivering environmental education sessions, sustainability teaching resources and activities to thousands of school students and community members. I’ve worked for government organisations and as a freelancer on a number of projects.

My passion is environmental education and I have developed a range of resources for government, environmental and water organisations such as Melbourne WaterAustralian Water Association and Parks Victoria. I have worked with Aqius Education on a number of curriculum projects over the last 6 years. As a VIT registered teacher, I have a strong knowledge of the Australian Curriculum.

My qualifications include:

  • Master of Communication (Professional Writing)

  • Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary)

  • Graduate Certificate in Applied Science

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Tourism Management)

I love Australia and am happiest out walking in the fresh air. I love the smells, the colours and the extremes of the Australian landscape. Over the years, I have watched countless kids experience our environment. I have watched them see the ocean for the first time and look at tiny creatures from our rivers under a microscope. Our country is breathtaking.
